> > > Dear Editor, > > Doubled haploid is a technology that allows rapid fixation of useful traits through chromosome doubling. Efforts have been made over the past decades to enhance haploid production for this reason (Jacquier et al. 2020). It has recently been demonstrated that MATRILINEAL/NOT LIKE DAD/ZmPHOSPHOLIPASE-A1 (MATL/NLD/ZmPLA1; for simplicity, ZmMATL hereafter), a pollen-specific phospholipase in maize (Zea mays), is involved in haploid induction in vivo (Gilles et al. 2017; Kelliher et al. 2017; Liu et al. 2017), which has the potential to be used as an efficient haploid production method. Subsequently, pollen-specific phospholipase A-mediated in vivo haploid induction was confirmed to be functionally well conserved in numerous monocots such as maize, rice (Oryza sativa), wheat (Triticum aestivum), and foxtail millet (Setaria italica) (Gilles et al. 2017; Kelliher et al. 2017; Liu et al. 2017; Yao et al. 2018; Liu et al. 2020; Cheng et al. 2021). OsMATL, a ZmMATL ortholog, was reported to trigger up to 6% intraspecific haploid induction when mutated in indica rice (Yao et al. 2018). However, this induction rate is still substantially below the industry standard. Patatin-related phospholipase AIIγ (AtpPLAIIγ), a female side putative ortholog of ZmMATL, was recently reported to induce haploid seeds in dicot Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) (Jang et al. 2023). This finding prompted us to re-test the closest gene in japonica rice. > >
